One of the puzzles facing man ever since the ancient Greeks and even before, is where the stars get their energy.  Only in the last century has it been realised how enormous is the amount of energy that each star will squander on its surroundings.  For example our sun pours out 4 million tons of its own mass every second, about ten thousand times the rate which water in the River Thames flows under Waterloo Bridge.
